Hipass Detection of an Intergalactic Gas Cloud in the Ngc 2442 Group
نویسنده
چکیده
We report the discovery, from the H I Parkes All-Sky Survey (HIPASS), of a gas cloud associated with the asymmetric spiral galaxy NGC 2442. This object, designated HIPASS J0731–69, contains ∼ 10 M⊙ of H I, or nearly one-third as much atomic gas as NGC 2442 itself. No optical counterpart to any part of HIPASS J0731–69 has yet been identified, consistent with the gas being diffuse, and with its stream-like kinematics. If the gas in HIPASS J0731–69 was once part of NGC 2442, then it was most likely a fairly recent tidal encounter with a moderately massive companion which tore it loose, although the possibility of ram-pressure stripping cannot be ruled out. This discovery highlights the potential of the HIPASS data for yielding new clues to the nature of some of the best-known galaxies in the local universe. Local Structures as Revealed by HIPASS
The HI Parkes All-Sky Survey (HIPASS) gives an unprecedented view of the local large-scale structures in the southern sky. I will review the results from the HIPASS Bright Galaxy Catalog (BGC, Koribalski et al. 2004) and the first version of the deep catalog (HICAT, Meyer et al. 2004) with particular emphasis on galaxy structures across the Zone of Avoidance. Some previously hardly noticed gala...
متن کاملTidal Debris found in the NGC 3783 Group ⋆
We have conducted wide-field H i mapping of a ∼ 5.5 × 5.5 region surrounding the NGC 3783 galaxy group, to an H i mass limit of ∼ 4 × 108M⊙. The observations were made using the multibeam system on the Parkes 64-m radiotelescope, as part of the Galaxy Evolution Multiwavelength Study (GEMS). We find twelve H i detections in our Parkes data, four more than catalogued in HIPASS. We find two new gr...
متن کاملRecycling of ghost galaxies : The origin of giant HI ring around NGC 1533
We propose that the giant HI ring recently discovered by HIPASS for S0 galaxy NGC 1533 is formed by unequal-mass merging between gas-rich LSB (low surface brightness: “ghost”) galaxies and HSB disks. The NGC 1533 progenitor HSB spiral is transformed into a barred S0 during merging and the outer HI gas disk of the LSB is transformed into the giant HI ring. We also discuss two different possibili...

We present a search for infrared dust emission associated with the Leo cloud, a large intergalactic cloud in the M96 group. Mid-infrared and far-infrared images were obtained with IRAC and MIPS on the Spitzer Space Telescope. Our analysis of these maps is done at each wavelength relative to the Hi spatial distribution. We observe a probable detection at 8 μm and a marginal detection at 24μm ass...
متن کاملMolecular Gas and Dust in Arp 94: the Formation of a Recycled Galaxy in an Interacting System
We present new results for the molecular gas, dust emission, and the ionized gas in J1023+1952, an H iYrich intergalactic star-forming tidal dwarf galaxy candidate. It is located at the projected intersection of two faint stellar tidal streams wrapped around the interacting pair of galaxies NGC 3227/6 (Arp 94). Using the IRAM 30m telescope, emission from CO(1Y0) and CO(2Y1) was detected across ...
